NIH follows a dual review system based on two sequential levels of review for each grant application - an initial peer review and a second-level review by NIH National Advisory Councils. NIH's initial review is performed either by the Center for Scientific Research or an Institute or Center Review Group that reviews and evaluates the scientific merit of research grant applications. The Peer Review module facilitates the initial review of grant applications.
Each review panel is headed by a scientific review officer (SRO), typically assisted by a grants clerk who goes by the title of extramural support assistant or grants technical assistant.
Who can use the Module?
The Peer Review module can be accessed by:
- Scientific review officers
- Extramural support assistants
These roles are assigned by technical representatives at the NIH Institute or Center.
